![]() However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. ![]() In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. ![]() Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. In marriage, God intends a man and a woman to bond together and create a new family, above any other human relationship. God responds to Adam’s felt need by creating a partner, an intimate ally. In this parade, it becomes clear to Adam that, in contrast, he has no suitable companion, no life partner. (ESV)įollowing His creation of the world, God commissions Adam to name the animals. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone I will make him a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. It doesn’t take effort or intentionality to be self-focused, unforgiving or impatient - that comes naturally.īut it takes an active choice, time in the Bible, prayer, praise and thankfulness to God to be able to “put on” kindness when it’s hard, to wear humility when you think you are right, or dress with forgiveness as generously as Jesus did. These verses talk about how you need to “dress” or respond each day in your relationships. While dating, you may have spent a lot of time thinking about how you will dress on your wedding day, but have you thought about what you will need to “wear” every day throughout your marriage? ![]() And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. ![]()
